Shakespeare's Tragedies of Love
DozentIn: Carmona Michels, M.Ed.
Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar
Ort: 41/B12
Zeiten: Fr. 10:00 - 12:00 (wöchentlich)
Beschreibung: Shakespeare’s tragedies Romeo & Juliet and Othello are plays that are not only widely known, but can be viewed as a popular treasure trove for rewarding analysis as well as reception with their many intriguing facets.
In this course, we will be dealing with the two plays to further assess and compare their nature as “tragedies of love.”
We will carefully analyse together how these renowned plays employ their different elements such as characterisation, language, setting, structure and important themes (power relationships, social factors and societal pressure, gender dynamics, jealousy, heartache…) to arrive at their particular effect.
By incorporating a mix of group discussions, projects, close readings, presentations and activities, as well as individual reflections, this seminar aims at answering the following questions (and many more):
-What are the different characters’ motivations and why do they have them?
-Which relevance do different characters and the settings have for the respective plays?
-How are the plays structured to achieve their tragic effect?
-How may different scenes have been presented on stage?
-What are the key differences and similarities between the two tragedies of love?
-Are the tragedies inevitable?
