Beschreibung: What does it mean to be playful? Do playing and gaming always involve a playful attitude or approach on the part of the player? How is playfulness relevant to representational works, their authors, and their recipients? This course is designed to address these questions and more, with a focus on the verbal-pictorial storytelling capabilities of comics and the interactive storytelling potential of video games. We will approach playfulness as an appropriative attitude characterized by a desire or willingness to be free from the restrictions of rules and conventions. Thus, as opposed to the activity of playing, which is often defined in terms of being voluntary, “non-serious,” and absorbing, the attitude of playfulness generally involves “playing with” or transforming established practices. By engaging with several unconventional comics, video games and crossovers between the two media, we will reflect on how authors and developers may challenge our expectations and sense-making efforts through the use of various self-reflexive techniques, as well as how playfulness might be implicated in the production and reception of works.
Please note that both in-class discussions and preparatory readings for the weekly sessions will be in English.
