This course is intended for students with no previous experience of translation who are looking to explore the topic for the first time. The course will take an applied approach to the study of contrastive linguistics. We will use the textbook by Mona Baker entitled In Other Words (3rd Ed or later). This book will take you through some topics of linguistics, grammar and style that you have already encountered in other classes, so you can refresh and reinforce your existing knowledge. You will use your knowledge to lead the class in translating a text of your choice based on a model demonstrated to you in the first week or two by Mr Murphy. You will earn your course credits for this course based on your class translation and a written paper of 2500 words, which will consist of 1000 words of translation and 1500 words of technical explanation. More information will be supplied at the start of the semester.
