Beschreibung: We all had that one teacher who drove us crazy by saying “Well, I don’t know if you *can* go to the toilet, but you may.” Comments like that refer to an alternative, apparently ‘literal’ meaning of an utterance even though the actual meaning is perfectly clear in the context of a situation. But how do language users work out the meaning of an utterance, and how can we define ‘meaning’ in the first place? In this course we will explore how meaning and knowledge are organized in our brains, how meaning is negotiated in interaction, what role metaphors play in everyday language use and why knowing grammar goes far beyond knowing rules.
