PWD: Academic Translation

DozentIn: M.A., dip. TEFL Robert John Murphy

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 01/214

Zeiten: Do. 12:00 - 14:00 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: "Translation" is often referred to as the "supreme linguistic discipline" because it requires its students and professionals to mobilise all they know about virtually everything - linguistics, literature, science, culture, politics, humanity and much more. "Academic translation" might be viewed as the supreme of supremes - as the culminating skill of any language scholar. This is because it brooks no errors, is a mode of communication - a writing culture - which is highly specific in itself, and which is used by the leaders in their fields to write about the groundbreaking discoveries of academic study. Do you want to really test yourself? Then this is the course for you. Even if you are not intending to become an academic translator yourself, you might appreciate the insights this course gives you into academic writing, especially if you are looking to write a Master's thesis in the near future.
Students will earn their credits on this course by presenting a translation of their own to the class for discussion, and writing a 2500-word paper, which will consist of 1000 words of translation and 1500 words of technical explanation.
